Covey Corner

The 7 Habits:

  • Habit 1: Be Proactive: You're in Charge
  • Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind: Have a Plan
  • Habit 3: Put First Things First: Work First, Then Play
  • Habit 4: Think Win-Win: Everyone Can Win
  • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood: Listen Before You Talk
  • Habit 6: Synergize: Together Is Better
  • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw: Balance Feels Best

Example of how Wenonah uses the Covey Habits:

Synergize at Mix It Up at Wenonah Lunch

Covey habits come together at Wenonah during their annual Mix It Up at Wenonah Lunch Day. During Mix It Up, students are randomly assigned a new and exciting seat in the cafeteria where they can meet new friends from different classes across different grades as part of a nationwide campaign. Students draw pictures of their new friends, or conduct interviews with questions brainstormed by fifth grade students. Students even sign a Mix it Up Pledge to appreciate and respect diversity.

Mix It Up brings Covey to the table as students adhere to Habit One: Be Proactive by taking the initiative to start a conversation with a new friend. Students make their own weather and are in charge of how successful Mix it Up will be for themselves. Will they take the first step and introduce themselves to a new friend? Students also use Habit Six: Synergize as they work together during the interview to break down barriers and find commonalities. Many students then reflect back on their experience as they write about it in the form of a newspaper article while in their classrooms.
